Louie-McGee, Sterk among Big Sky weekly award winners
FARMINGTON, Utah (September 9, 2019) – The Big Sky ROOT SPORTS Offensive Player of the Week nod went to Weber State running back Josh Davis. UC Davis’s Devon King and Montana State’s Bryce Sterk shared Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Montana return specialist Jerry Louie-McGee earned Special Teams honors.
Sterk, a former Washington transfer who led the league in sacks and tackles for loss, registered six tackles in the 38-17 victory over No. 12 Southeast Missouri State. Included in his tackles were a trio of sacks for a loss of 13 yards, as Montana State held SEMO to 245 yards and 12 first downs. Sterk’s 2.0 sacks per game rank second in the FCS through two weeks and his 2.0 tackles-for-loss per game is 15th in the FCS. He leads the Big Sky in both categories.
Louie-McGee registered a 74-yard punt return in the third quarter that helped lift Montana to a 61-17 win over North Alabama. It was the third punt return for a touchdown in Louie-McGee’s career. The senior collected five punts for a total of 150 yards, an average of 30 yards per touch. Louie-McGee’s 150 total yards are the most in a game of any player in FCS football so far this season.
Davis led the Wildcats with 14 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns in Weber State’s 41-24 win over Cal Poly. He had a 22-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and an 18-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The sophomore averaged 9.2 yards per carry. Davis also had five receptions for 35 yards, giving him 164 all-purpose yards.
King recorded the game-saving tackle and forced a fumble in the process at the goal-line with 0:02 left in the fourth quarter to preserve UC Davis’ road win at San Diego. The sophomore helped lift the Aggies to a 38-35 win against the Toreros. King hit the Torero running back right at the goal line, forcing the ball loose before he could break the plane. The ball was recovered by UC Davis in the end zone for a touchback, saving the 3-point victory. In addition to the heart-stopping play, King had 7 tackles (5 solo, 2 assists) and an interception in the win.
